South Korean President Moon Jae-in shakes hands with Kim Yo-jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, after receiving a letter of invitation at the Blue House in Seoul on Saturday. (AP Photo)SEOUL: North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has invited South Korean President Moon Jae-in to Pyongyang "at an early date", South Korean officials said on Saturday, potentially setting up the first meeting of Korean leaders in more than 10 years. North Korea has spent years developing its military, saying it needs to protect itself from US aggression. Pence said the United States and South Korea were closely aligned in their approach to dealing with North Korea. In January 1968, Kim Yo-jong's grandfather, founding North Korean president Kim Il Sung, sent a squad of North Korean commandos to Seoul who tried unsuccessfully to kill then-president Park Chung-hee.
